Introduction

Particle board, also known as chipboard, is an engineered wood product manufactured by compressing wood particles—such as wood chips, sawmill shavings, sawdust, and other lignocellulosic residues—with a synthetic resin binder under high temperature and pressure. Common binders include urea-formaldehyde, melamine-urea-formaldehyde, or phenol-formaldehyde adhesives. Additives like paraffin wax may be added to improve moisture resistance. Increasingly, recycled wood fibers from industrial or post-consumer waste are used to enhance sustainability. Particle board is widely used in furniture, cabinetry, shelving, and flooring underlayment due to its low cost, uniform density, and efficient use of wood resources. However, it is generally less strong and less moisture-resistant than solid wood or plywood.

Particle board is extensively used in the production of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture, including desks, bookshelves, wardrobes,frames, and office storage units. It is typically covered with melamine, wood veneer, or laminate to enhance its appearance and resistance to moisture and wear, providing a functional and affordable solution for both residential and commercial settings.

In construction, particle board is often used as an underlayment beneath finished floor coverings such as carpet, vinyl sheet, or laminate flooring. It provides a flat, stable, and uniform base that helps improve the performance and lifespan of the final floor surface, especially in dry indoor environments.

Materials

Particle board is made primarily from wood-based raw materials, including wood chips, sawdust, shavings, and other cellulose residues from both softwood and hardwood species. These wood particles are bonded together using synthetic resins such as urea-formaldehyde or phenol-formaldehyde. Additives like paraffin wax may be added to improve water resistance. Increasingly, recycled wood fibers from post-consumer or industrial waste are used to enhance sustainability. No solid wood logs are directly used; instead, the board relies entirely on wood byproducts and binders for its composition.
